AN EIGHT-MONTH renovation project at a Canvey community centre has officially begun.

Councillors and residents met with contractors at the Paddocks in Long Road to officially hand over the keys so a £1.5-million project can get underway.

Dave Blackwell, leader of Castle Point Council, said: “Renovations to the Paddocks are long overdue, so we welcome the start of these works.

“Our residents deserve to have a centre that can serve the community well and we believe this investment will ensure it remains an important asset for the borough.”

Contractors moved onto the Canvey Island site to secure it and install the necessary cabins and fixtures to enable their work. Last week, the first phase of work began with scaffolding being erected on the low-level roof.

A range of improvements will be made to the centre, including upgrades to the electrics, heating, lighting, and ventilation systems.

The Paddocks is expected to reopen in late September. Until then, current users have been offered alternative provision at other council facilities.
