A MAJOR coffee giant is “thrilled” to get the green light for its eighth Basildon branch, as the council has approved its supermarket café takeover.

Costa Coffee applied to run the café at Sainsbury’s at Cricketers Retail Park in Cricketers Way, Pitsea, making it the eighth branch in the borough.

Following approval from councillors on Wednesday, the chain plans to open its latest café soon.

A spokesman said: “We’re thrilled to be opening a new Costa Coffee store in Sainsbury’s East Mayne Superstore this spring.”

Councillors agreed to lift a planning restriction which prevented Sainsbury’s subletting or allowing additional concessions at the store. The supermarket’s café is currently vacant.

The Costa spokesman added: “As the home of our Roastery in Christopher Martin Road, Basildon holds a special place in our hearts.

“We’re excited to expand our presence in the local community, offering customers a place to relax with their favourite Costa coffee after their weekly shop, or to catch up with friends and family.”
