DETECTIVES investigating a "serious assault" in Shoebury are appealing for witnesses after a man suffered a "significant wound".

A man was attacked near Elm Road shortly before 6.45pm yesterday evening, sustaining "a significant wound to his hand". He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Officers immediately searched the area and stayed at the scene throughout the evening as they continued their enquiries.

The scene was stood down by 11.30pm, although the investigation is ongoing. 

Police are urging witnesses, or anyone with information or camera footage, to come forward.

Detective Inspector Steve Franklin, from Southend Criminal Investigation Department, said: “At this stage, we believe this to be an isolated incident and I would like to reassure the community in the area that at this point we believe there is no wider threat to members of the public.

“Although such incidents remain rare, we take matters of violence extremely seriously and are working quickly to establish a picture of what took place.

“I would urge anyone with any concerns, or with information about this incident, to contact us as soon as possible."
