FURIOUS residents have slammed plans to install a huge new 50ft tall 5G mast in the “middle of a beloved piece of open space”.
Work is set to begin in the coming days to install the huge new mast on Radwinter Avenue, in Wickford but residents have taken aim at Basildon Council for “ignoring” their concerns and “failing to notify” them of the plans.
Plans were approved by Basildon Council last year but preparation works are now underway on the site which is loved by dogwalkers and residents.
Residents in the area emailed objections to the council as well as handing in a petition, but claim they received no response.
David Gordon, a resident in Ingrave Close, said: “I am appalled with the local authority for the manner in which they have not consulted with local residents who are heavily impacted with the siting and appearance of the 15m high mast.
“It visually disturbs the green area where it will be sighted, an area utilised heavily by dog walkers, and residents for local walks.
“We were asked for our views via consultation, I submitted a letter requesting clarification, suggesting a potential more suitable location that holds less adverse impact on the community.”
George Jeffery, councillor responsible for the Wickford Park ward, was also concern about the plans as well as the planning process.
He added: “In the planning process it is crucial for residents to be able to voice their views on matters that directly impact them.
“The planning department, by failing to acknowledge the receipt of their petition and formal letters, has left residents feeling ignored, which I believe must be changed.
“The greenery is a buffer between these residents and Golden Jubilee Way. Residents also gave alternative locations too. They submitted a petition, and raised their concerns, but received no response at all.”
“This is concerning. The council should seek to extend a common courtesy to residents and those who wish to express a view to confirm their comments have been received and will be taken into consideration during the planning process.”
Basildon Council and the applicant CK Infrastructure Holdings have been contacted by the Echo for comment.
