A DRIVER careered off the road in “torrential rain” and smashed into a parked car - shunting it into the front of a home.
The front-window of the home, in Fairfax Drive, Westcliff, has been boarded up after the crash and neighbours have described hearing a “huge boom” as the parked car hit the house.
According to neighbours, it was “lucky no-one was killed” as the car spun off the road during bad weather after “swerving to avoid an e-scooter rider”.
Yesterday, the front window of the home remained boarded up and a pile of rubble was on the driveway.
Paul Stevenson, a nearby Fairfax Drive resident, said: “There was torrential rain. It was hammering it down.
“My wife and I had a sense of something being wrong, and then there was a loud ‘boom’.
“I asked my wife, ‘what was that?’ I stuck my head out the door and saw who I believe was the driver.
“I heard they had swerved to avoid someone on an e-scooter.
“Within 15 minutes, the road was closed, and police and ambulance crews had arrived.”
Essex Police were called to the scene and have confirmed no arrests have been made at this stage of the investigation.
While there is no suggestion the crash was caused by a speeding driver, Mr Stevenson says the separate issue of drivers breaking the 30 mile per hour speed limit along Fairfax Drive must be tackled.
Mr Stevenson, 57, added: “It’s amazing we’ve not had more accidents.
“It’s just perpetual, especially at night. Cars come along, slow down when they see the crossing, then get to the other side and put their foot down.
“The noise they make gives you a sense of the speed.
“It’s a long, straight road. There are no speed pumps or cameras, so I guess the temptation is too great.
“You’ve got to be really cautious, getting off the drive. People are going too quickly and are not willing to slow down. There’s no incentive for them to.
“It’s not right up here. The traffic seems free to go as fast as it likes.”
