A NEW "selfie-signpost" has been installed at the tip of Southend’s pier, mimicking the iconic signpost at Land's End which has been a huge hit with visitors since the 1950s.
The new signpost was unveiled yesterday at the end of the 1.3mile pier and residents and tourists are being urged to visit the pier and snap a selfie at the newest attraction.
Similarly to the Land’s End signpost, Southend Pier’s sign also showcases the distance to New York, while highlighting the distances to various destinations, including Hadleigh Castle, Red Sands Fort and London.
The signpost also features a nod to Southend Pier’s role during the Second World War, when it served as a muster point for boats heading to Dunkirk to evacuate troops.
The sign has been posted at the end of Southend Pier so visitors can snap a picture with breathtaking views of the Thames Estuary in the background.
Councillor Tony Cox, leader of the council, said: “This new feature symbolises our commitment to rejuvenating Southend Pier, ensuring it remains a beacon of pride for our community and an enticing draw for visitors.
“The signpost is more than just a photo opportunity - it’s a representation of Southend’s welcoming spirit and our connection to both local and global destinations. We are excited for everyone to experience it.”
Southend Council has stated the sign’s installation forms part of a “broader initiative” to revitalise the “numerous exciting developments planned to enhance the visitor experience”.
A number of events are planned in coming weeks, including an Easter egg hunt on the pier from March 29 until April 1, as well as the “Great Pier Walk” event on May 19, which will see hundreds of people walk the pier to raise money for the Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity.
The pier is also taking part in the Window Wanderland event from Friday until Sunday, which will see buildings across the city transformed into fabulous displays with artwork adorning windows.
A council spokesman added: “The council invites locals and visitors alike to explore the pier and its latest addition this Easter. With its blend of historic charm and new attractions, Southend Pier continues to be a must-visit destination that offers something for everyone.”
