A "TRUE war hero" was treated to a surprise party as he celebrated his 100th birthday.
Cyril Barrell, who lives in Benfleet, was a proud member of the Welsh Guards 3rd Battalion during the Second World War and fought in the battle of Monte Cassino – one of the bloodiest battles of the conflict in Italy.
The centenarian marked the milestone surrounded by his family and friends at a surprise party on Saturday.
Cyril is one of the last of the generation who fought in the Second World War still living in his district.
Rebecca Harris, MP for Castle Point, attended his surprise birthday party.
She said: “I was invited to a surprise birthday party for a very special man.
“It was lovely to celebrate it with him and his family and friends.
“Cyril is one of the last of the amazing generation who fought in the Second World War still living in Castle Point. He is still sharp as a button and has some truly amazing stories.
“Well done to his family and friends for throwing such a fantastic party. Happy Birthday Cyril.”
