Traffic in Benfleet and getting onto Canvey is reportedly at a "standstill" as part of a key road has been closed.
The A13 has been shut from Sadlers Farm to the Tarpots junction.
Drivers in the area have described heavy traffic "like rush hour", with "gridlock everywhere" surrounding the closure.
This closure is due to the emergency removal of a down power line along that stretch of road, the Echo understands.
An Essex County Council traffic control spokesman shared on X: "A13 closed between Tarpots and Sadlers Farm due to emergency cable works. Delays on Sadlers Farm and through Benfleet."
Live roadworks map one.network shows the closure is scheduled until 11.59pm tonight.
