There's nothing like a good fish and chip supper - but here are some unsung south Essex chip shops that take a chippy tea to the next level.

"We chose from the wide range of vegan options which beat any we’ve found elsewhere. Vegan tartare sauce and a slice of lemon with the tofish was a nice touch. Also appreciated the non-plastic packaging and non-animal derived cooking oil.
"Thanks for a delicious meal on a rainy night. We’ll be back"
3. Howard's Fish and Grill, Benfleet
With 151 reviews on Tripadvisor, this High Road favourite scores an average of 4.5 stars.
But Howard's is not just limited to great quality fish and chips. It also serves up roasted chicken and meat pies.

"All were very good. A special mention for the chips as I think they are the best chip shop chips I have ever tasted.
"Both times I have visited on a Saturday, early evening, the queues have been quite long, but I presume this is because they are providing excellent quality and quantity. I, for one, do not mind a short wait for a first-class takeaway."

"Also had a medium piece of cod and it was beautifully cooked. Nice thin crisp batter and big, white flaky cod inside.
"I could almost feel a pulse. Seriously, I rang Bruno today and told him that his fish - the Salmon especially, was so fantastic.
"This man really knows his fish. What a gem of a place. Bruno really knows how to treat a piece of fish with respect and expertise and make it sing."
