HUNDREDS of bikers rumbled into Southend as an “unofficial” Shakedown event took over the seafront to the delight of residents and visitors.
The Southend Shakedown, previously an annual Easter Monday fixture, was cancelled this year due to a “lack of resources”, including marshals.
Despite the lack of the official event, bikers turned out in large numbers and descended on Southend in droves.
Bikers were met with a large police presence, barricades, and safety officers marshalling them into the former Gas Works car park on Eastern Esplanade, but were quick to praise the event even if it was on a scaled back level compared to previous years.
Shane Fountain, 36, from Stanford-Le-Hope, runs Big Beards BBQ and has a lifelong passion for motoring was one of many bikers who rode into the city.
He said: “It’s nice to see the bikes out on a sunny day. If you suffer with depression like I do, it helps clear the mind.
“I like classic cars but they’ve become too expensive, so this is like a more affordable big boy’s toy. It’s good to be out with friends on a sunny day.”
“Choosing to put your time into your passion is so good for you. Your bike is like an extension of your personality.”
Although police made three arrests and seized four vehicles, a good time was enjoyed by most of the bikers.
Shane admits previous Shakedowns have been marred by the behaviour of a few individuals.
However, he added: “The vast majority are just here for a good time.
“Yes, it’s loud, but the bikes are only here in the daytime. It’s not disturbing people who are sleeping. And it’s in a busy, vibrant area.
“It brings people in from all over and puts the area on the map.
“Think of how much money this will bring in. It makes a huge difference. As a local business owner, I’d welcome it.”
Regular Shakedown visitor Edward Wing has been riding motorbikes for 20 years.
He said: “Bikes have been coming to Southend for as long as I can remember. As long as it’s a chilled day out and everyone’s on the same page, what’s the issue?”
Shay Wiffen, who visited with friends from Chelmsford for their first Shakedown, said: “We do feel welcome. They’ve found us a spot, and they’re not making us pay to park. The police are here, but they’re not bothering us.”
