THE Echo’s archives are full of pictures evoking memories of yesteryear and we’ve been taking a look at amazing images of Southend’s Pier Hill, which show how it has changed over the decades.
Our pictures of the old Ritz cinema, which was demolished in the 1980s, have prompted many memories from readers on Facebook.
From the seafront - Pier Hill in the 1930s
Now, we’ve found an amazingly evocative image of the old Ritz cinema showing the clear aspect near the Palace Hotel with the Queen Victoria statue in view (before it was moved along the cliffs).
Buses - the old Westcliff Bus Company No 17 on Pier Hill
The picture, found in the Echo archives, was sent in by Jane Sales who says it was taken by her grandfather in the late 1950s.
It also shows 1950s fashions and a Southend Corporation Bus. The film showing is Reap the Wild Wind.
