American burger giant Wendy's has put all of its signs up in Southend High Street - revealing the new restaurant is opening this summer.

Plans for new signs at the former Ponden Home Interiors shop were approved by Southend Council in March.

Now this work has been completed, as Wendy’s, which boasts hundreds of restaurants across America but just dozens in the UK, is just months away from opening its newest branch in July.

The shop had been empty for four years and the plans to open the new restaurant in the vacant site were welcomed by councillors.

Just four doors away from McDonald’s, and the burger joint will be joining a growing number of cafes, bars and restaurants in the city centre.

This includes Mediterranean restaurant Black and Red Bistro Grill, Mexican eatery Plan Burrito and Asian-inspired Sokuri, which have all thrown open their doors in recent weeks.

After the chain revealed an Essex expansion plan earlier this year, a spokesman for Wendy's said: "Brand fans in Essex will be able to enjoy Wendy’s by the sea, setting roots in Southend.

"After celebrating a successful year in Northern Gateway Leisure park, Wendy’s will be opening its second restaurant in Colchester, bang on the high street as a result of residents demanding more access to Wendy’s in the city.

"This also follows a successful launch in Chelmsford in March."
