EARLIER this month, Southend Council’s new administration revealed a list of their and aims aspirations for the city.

One point on the list, which caught the attention of many, stated: “Work towards reintroducing modern versions of permanent attractions such as the Illuminations”.

In the 1930s, the seafront had its own version of the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations, which started in 1879.

At one point, the Southend lights were judged third best in the world after Coney Island and Atlantic City’s displays in the USA.

For decades, day-trippers would come to the then town to see the spectacular lights that spanned across the golden mile.

However, in 2007, darkness fell due to no cash being available for them.

Instead, in 2022, a new event was introduced – Southend LuminoCity – which saw colourful light installations installed across the city centre for a weekend event.

The event proved a huge success as hundreds of thousands of people came down to the city to see the dazzling, colourful lights that shine brightly across Southend.

However, after two years it was scrapped for 2024 as council bosses grappled with a £10.7 million budget blackhole.

Last week, Matt Dent, Labour councillor responsible for culture, tourism, and business, said: “We saw how successful LuminoCity was, there was a gap when it didn’t take place this year. The draw of that to Southend and businesses was really missed.

“The gap needs to be filled. We want to see a series of events like that.

“I have only been in cabinet a few days, so there is still a lot of finding out to do, but it is on our agenda to deliver an attraction of that kind in Southend.”

Whether the Southend’s famous illuminations will ever return, your guess is as good as mine. But could we see a modern version of it? We will have to wait and see…
