TWO people were rushed to hospital and a home has been left "completely" destroyed after an early hours blaze at a block of flats in Westcliff.

Emergency services were called to Bur Hill Chase at 4.35am this morning to reports of a fire inside a second floor flat.

On arrival firefighters were faced with flames coming from a second floor window and reported a room on the second floor was completely alight.

Photos from the scene show smoke billowing from the windows, with the flat left "completely destroyed" from the blaze.

Crews tackled the fire as well as evacuating people who lived on the same corridor. The rest of the residents were told to stay in their homes as part of the building's "stay put" policy.

Following the blaze, two people were taken to Southend Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called just before 4.50am to a building fire on Burr Hill Chase in Southend.

"Two ambulances, an ambulance officer vehicle and the Hazardous Area Response Team were sent to the scene.

"Two patients were transported to Southend University Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.”

Officers will now carry out an investigation into the cause.

Watch manager Richard Burch from Southend Fire Station said: "The fire doors did their job, which meant the fire was contained to the flat where it started. Although sadly the flat has been completely destroyed by fire, there was only some smoke damage to the rest of the floor meaning no one else has lost their home."

"Our crews were faced with a significant fire on arrival and it was thanks to their hard work we brought this under control and extinguished it quickly," he added.
