NEW restrictions preventing children from “going to the school down their road” have been reversed in a U-turn.

Riverside Primary School in Ferry Road, Hullbridge, was placed in the same school catchment area as Rayleigh for the new school year.

Last month the Echo reported how children were missing out on places at their closest primary school due to competition for places.

Independent councillor, Michael Hoy previously raised concerns that Hullbridge children were missing out on places, which could lead to parents being forced to quit their jobs and pay extortionate childcare fees.

The county council has now agreed to fund an additional reception class and all children on waiting lists will be offered a place.

Mr Hoy praised the move but questioned why it had been allowed to happen in the first place.

He said: “I am really pleased with how they have managed to do this and I have had feedback from parents saying how pleased they are.

“There are a few details that must still be ironed out however.”

Mr Hoy added he is “upset” about the situation regardless, as it “shouldn’t have happened”.

“In July 2023 I had a briefing saying Riverside would need to increase in size to accommodate more pupils and then suddenly they were grouped in with Rayleigh schools.

“It made no sense, it was done without telling ward councillors and it shouldn’t have happened.

“I am not convinced a bulge year is the answer but I will take that up with Essex County Council to prevent this happening again, there will need to be more information and there are more questions to be asked.”

A spokesman for Essex County Council, said: “Following the outcome of the primary admission round for September 2024, 14 children living in Hullbridge did not secure a place at Riverside Primary School, which is the nearest primary school to their home address.

“This is because the 60 available places were offered to children ranking higher against the admissions criteria.

“The council has reflected on this situation and, following discussions with the school, has agreed to fund an additional Reception class for September 2024.

“All of the children on the school’s waiting list will now be offered a place.

“Letters will be sent directly to the parents and carers of these children to inform them of this.”
