THE Coastguard in Southend has tonight warned people to stay away from a huge 7ft deep hole discovered on Shoebury East Beach which could be a “danger to life”.
HM Coastguard Southend was called out at 4.40pm today to reports of a large hole which had been found on the beach.
Coastguard bosses have now warned beach-goers to keep their distance, warning people collapsing sand could trap them, endangering their life.
Once on scene today, the area around the hole - roughly 9ft long, 7ft to 8ft wide and 7ft deep had already been cordoned off.
Coastguard officers said they reported their findings to Dover Maritime Coordination Centre (MRCC) along with photos and the items seen scattered around the hole and area.
Southend Pier and Foreshore team has also been informed.
A Coastuguard spokesman said: “We ask members of the public to remain well clear of the hole and ask parents to remind their children to not venture in any holes on the beach.
“Holes will collapse around you and the mix of water and sand will cement you in situ endangering life.
“Should you see anyone in trouble on or near the coast, don’t hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard, you could save someone’s life.”
