CASTLE Point’s Rebecca Harris has been made a Dame in the King’s Birthday Honours for her political and public service.
Dame Rebecca has served as the Member of Parliament for Castle Point since 2010 and has received the distinguished honour for her service to the nation.
The prominent honour was bestowed upon Dame Rebecca for her work on Brexit and domestic abuse legislation.
She was also recognised for her advocacy of small businesses in the House of Commons.
Before the calling of the General Election, Ms Harris served as a Senior Government Whip and held the unique position of “Comptroller of His Majesty’s Household”.
This special title dates back to 1399, and Dame Rebecca became the first ever woman to hold the role.
Reacting to the award, Dame Rebecca said: “This is an incredible honour.
“It is a privilege to serve the public and Parliament and I am overwhelmed to have received this recognition.
“I have only ever tried to do my best for people regardless of their politics.
“Thank you to all of those who have already been in touch expressing their warm wishes.”
Dame Rebecca has taken part in numerous official ceremonies, including the State Funeral procession and service of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty Queen Camilla in 2023.
Former Prime Minister Lord David Cameron said: “Her honour from His Majesty King Charles is well deserved.
“She has a talent for rising above the political noise in Westminster to build cross-party consensus on important legislation that all parties can agree on.
“Most of her efforts forever go unseen and I am pleased that she has received this recognition for her hard work.”
Dame Rebecca holds the distinction of being the second person to serve as the MP for Castle Point to receive a high honour from the reigning monarch.
The first was Sir Bernard Braine who was awarded a knighthood in the 1972 New Years Honours List.
Dame Rebecca is running for re-election as the Conservative Candidate for Castle Point.
The other candidates standing are Bob Chapman for Green Party, Mark Maguire for Labour, Keiron McGill for Reform UK, and James Willis for Lib Dems.
