Hundreds of runners braved the rain to take part in a race in Basildon to raise money for a vital cause.

Basildon's Race for Life event saw hundreds of runners, both solo and in teams, getting involved to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Gloucester Park was packed with people, either running or out in support of those participating in 3 km and 5km runs.

Runners also faced a 5 km mud run event, battling through wet and windy conditions to support the charity. 

Elise Balster, a consultant at frequent Race for Life sponsor Slimming World, called the atmosphere at the event "great”.

"It was so good, it was great to see people geared up for a good run with a good atmosphere.

"We've had lots of our group members running today and some have managed to raise quite a lot of money.

"The highlight for me has been being at the event with our full team of consultants, we are a team of six people and we have been here as a team to display our support to the community.

"The race has had a really positive feeling today, it has been great."

Denis Smith from Lee Chapel, tackled the "cold and wet" to conquer the 5 km mud run ran to support a friend of his.

"It has been an amazing feeling to be here," he said.

"Seeing how a friend of mine battled cancer and beat it inspired me and she has been so strong and so amazing throughout.

"I just want to thank everyone who donated to my cause, I've been joined today by a great group of friends.

"It has been a very cold run but we've gone and raised a lot of money for the cause."
