AN ABANDONED home which has stood empty since a fire broke out will be demolished and transformed into seven new flats.

A developer has been given the green light to carry out work after telling Southend Council the building “poses a risk to public safety” and creating new homes would be a huge boost in the area.

The home, in Park Street, Westcliff, was hit by a fire in August 2021, which also spread to a neighbouring property, and left it “beyond repair”.

Under the plans the home and a neighbouring bike shop - which has stood empty for 15 years - would be razed to the ground and replaced with seven homes.

It is hoped the project will “enhance the area” and be a “catalyst for future development”.

The applicant, Mr Johnson, said: “It not only enhances the site but also its immediate context, creating a catalyst for future developments.”

The plan consists of a two-storey block, creating a total of seven new homes. These will comprise of four one-bedroom properties and three two-bedroom properties.

In the application, Mr Johnson added: “The proposed demolition of the existing building to make way for the construction of seven new residential apartments is not only a necessary step but also a promising opportunity for revitalisation.

“After sitting vacant for 15 years and enduring a fire in 2021, the current structure stands as a stark reminder of neglect and lost potential.

“By clearing the site and introducing new, modern living spaces, the aim is to breathe new life into the neighbourhood, creating homes that enhance both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the community.

“The decision to demolish the existing building is due to safety, sustainability, and progress.”

The plans were approved by Southend Council this week and work will can now begin.

“The presence of an abandoned and damaged structure poses risks to public safety and detracts from the surrounding area’s appeal,” Mr Johnson added.

“By honouring the past while embracing the future, the development aspires to create a timeless and enriching environment that fosters a sense of belonging and pride among residents.”
