A LONG-awaited £27million Basildon cinema will finally throw open its doors this summer, amid reports it will start screening films in August.

Following almost three years of delays, which culminated in Vue taking over the empty Empire Cinema in the town centre earlier this year, bosses at the chain have revealed they are now recruiting 50 staff as the final preparations are put in place.

Vue UK territory general manager, Toby Bradon, recently visited the cinema to see how it is making progress and has confirmed it will open to families “during the summer holidays”.

Residents who have spoken to workers on the site in recent weeks have claimed they were told it “will open in August”.

Labour councillor in charge of leisure, Aiden McGurran, welcomed the progress and the cinema for the town centre. He said: “The town centre needs something, we want to see what we haven’t seen so far, which is people going out.

“It helps the night-time economy, which desperately needs help, and the cinema is part of the regeneration plans, as we were keen to get something into the space Empire left.”

Mr McGurran added though that Labour were keen to scrutinise the deal, even if it cannot be undone now. He added: “The prior administration were keen to get another cinema in there, the perception is that the deal they gave is good for Vue and not for the council.

“We have nothing against Vue but we need to scrutinise the deal, though I’d be amazed if we could change anything.”

The cinema will feature 10 screens, stadium-tiered leather seats alongside Vue recliners, high-definition 4k screens and high-end projection and sound systems.

Mr Bradon said: “It was wonderful to have the opportunity to see our new venue come to life.

“We’re excited to bring Vue to Basildon in time for families to enjoy films during the summer holidays. To help us offer the big-screen experience we are renowned for, we are seeking to recruit a team who are passionate about the films made for the big screen and creating an exceptional experience for customers.

“The vacancies are a fantastic opportunity for avid film fans in particular, and those who excel in a customer-service role.”
