Southend’s iconic Cliff Lift has finally reopened two months after breaking down.
The lift, on the seafront between Clifton Terrace and Western Esplanade, has been out of action since May 7 as volunteers waited for parts to be delivered from Germany to carry out vital repairs.
The 112-year-old lift is manned by a team of volunteers who announced it would finally re-open yesterday after the repair work had been completed.

Luis Perez, 58, from Westcliff, said: “The re-opening of the Cliff Lift today is a significant event for residents and visitors.
“The Cliff Lift has been a beloved and essential feature on the seafront.
“It is more than just a means of transportation, it is a cherished landmark that connects the seafront with the cliff top, offering stunning views.
“Having personally used it numerous times, it is an invaluable service, particularly for individuals with mobility issues. I am very pleased.”
When it first opened back in August 1912, it was branded a state-of-the-art addition to the then town.
Last June, it was recognised as a site of historical importance to national transport heritage with a Red Wheel plaque.
Southend resident, Lesley Taylor, 59, added: “I love the Cliff Lift.
“It is on my doorstep and allows me to access the seafront without using the steps.
“Also I want to take my grandchildren to use it as it is part of Southend’s history.
“So, I am so happy it is back working and will be on it this weekend.”
In 2023, approximately 20,000 people travelled on the Cliff Lift.
The lift runs on a single track, which is 40m long and carries 12 people.
The Cliff Lift – one of more than 40 funiculars in the UK – is run entirely by volunteers who operate it between 10:30am and 3pm daily – dependent on volunteer availability.
Volunteers for the Cliff Lift confirmed on their social media that it would be reopening today. If you are interested in joining the team of volunteers who manage the lift and keep it running, visit during opening hours and speak to a lift operator.
