PUPILS at a secondary school have been praised for being “tolerant and respectful” by Ofsted inspectors after a positive inspection.

Shoebury High School, in Caulfield Road, has retained its "good" rating – the second highest possible - following an inspection on June 4 and 5.

The school, which has almost 1,800 pupils, has been praised for making a series of improvements since an ungraded inspection last May warned it was it risk of not retaining its rating.

However, the school has since made improvements with inspectors crediting the institution for raising standards of behaviour “significantly.”

Inspectors praised the school for improving the quality of provision for pupils with special educational needs and revising their curriculum after identifying that it was “not effective or ambitious enough”

The school, which last had a full inspection in 2017, retained its “good” rating.

The report stated: “Pupils can access a range of support to resolve any worries or concerns. This includes access to counselling and support for mental health. Typically, pupils feel happy and safe as a result. “The school has raised standards of behaviour significantly. Students in the sixth form are tolerant and respectful and behave maturely.

“Most pupils behave well. However, a small number of older boys are not respectful enough. This makes a minority of pupils feel uncomfortable.

“The school has revised the curriculum because it identified that it was not effective or ambitious enough. This work has ensured the curriculum now has both sufficient breadth and academic ambition. “ However, the report also stated that the school must improve in a few areas to achieve a higher rating, including working further with female pupils who are made to feel uncomfortable by a “small minority” of older boys.

The report added: “A small minority of older boys do not show enough respect towards others. As a result, this makes a minority of pupils, especially some girls, feel uncomfortable.”

Headteacher of Shoebury High School, Teri-Leigh Jones, said: “We are delighted to share the recent Ofsted report, which continues to rate Shoebury High School as ‘Good’ across all key areas. This achievement is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our entire school community.

“We are committed to building on these successes and acknowledging where we can do even better. Our goal is to continue providing a high-quality education and a supportive environment where every student can thrive.”
