FOUR years ago Emily Jellet took a risk and decided to turn her “hobby” of making chocolate at home into a full-time business.

And the risk has paid off for the 28-year-old after she was honoured with a prestigious award at London’s Portobello market.

Emily, owner of the Tempered Peach of Wickford, was crowned Grocery Young Trader of the Year for London and South East at a young trader’s award in the capital.

The 28-year-old, from Wickford, started pursuing her “dream” in 2020 as the pandemic hit and taught herself the ins and outs of chocolate making by watching YouTube videos and reading cookbooks.

Now, she produces her own line of chocolate bars - in a range of flavours including lemon and coconut - which have proved a huge hit with customers.

Although the journey has not always been an easy one, Emily says the award has given her the “boost” she needs.

She said: “I discovered chocolate making in 2018 and got a bit obsessed with it. I taught myself everything and during the pandemic, I was sitting at home and thought ‘just go for it’ and I started the business and haven’t looked back since.

“I still have a part time job and make my chocolate from home. It has always been my dream to be my own boss and maybe one day I can go full time with this.

“The journey has been very up and down so far. The award just reminds you to give yourself a pat on the back.

“Only a few weeks ago I was contemplating the future of the business because of rising cocoa prices but winning this award has given me the confidence and boost to know that I’m doing well.

“I was really shocked when I won and I am super grateful to have been chosen among so many great businesses.”

Emily will now compete with businesses across the country as she heads to the national final in Stratford-Upon-Avon in August.

“The support I have received has been amazing,” she added.

“My favourite part is the community that I have created through the business. I have learnt so much about myself on this journey.

“I think I am going on the right route and I just want to keep making great chocolate for people.”
