Ice-cream relays, javelin throwing and miniature shot-put competitions delighted Southend beachgoers as a hit ITV daytime show was filmed on the seafront.

This Morning took over Southend’s Jubilee Beach to film a "beach Olympics" segment for the massively popular daytime programme.

The beach was turned into a mini sports day as residents competed for medals in front of a film crew.

Those who participated in the events won a small This Morning gold medal to keep and a cone of Rossi’s ice cream.

The segment was capped off with presenter, Will Best, declaring he would “swim to France” to the laughter of those gathered on the packed beach, before sprinting into the water and swimming into the distance.

Trudy Cone, son Bradley and Sue Hicky took part in the shot-put event, with Bradley winning a medal for the event.

And Trudy said: “We did the shot-put event and we are really trying to get an ice cream from the ice-cream relay event.

“Bradley had a great time doing the event, the presenters were very nice to us and him.”

Bradley added that “he had a fun time” doing the event and was proud of the medal that Best had presented to him.

Sue said: “We had a really fun time, we had to throw a boule in teams, I travelled down for 8.30am to be able to see this.

“We all really want one of these ice creams.”

Lydia Clary was one of the winners of the ice-cream relay event, having ran down to the seafront after seeing the recognisable location on her television.

She said: “I saw that the event was going to happen originally on Facebook and made plans, but I raced down to the event after seeing it on my TV.

“I was so surprised when they called me up to do the ice-cream relay, it was a great event and really nice for people on the beach.”
