A dispersal order has been put in place following reports of pony and trap racing event being planned in Southend and Leigh.

Essex Police are aware of races being planned along the seafront today.

A dispersal order - giving police additional powers to move on groups - is in place from 6am this morning until 6am tomorrow.

Inspector Aaron Bradford said: “These types of events pose a real danger to people on the road, as well as those taking part.

“In similar events we’ve also seen the traps ridden along footpaths and on the wrong side of the road.

“We cannot tolerate behaviour which puts the public at risk and so we are taking this pre-emptive action to prevent the event taking place.

“If you’re in these areas today you can expect to see a visible police presence and if you have any concerns please come and speak to us.”
