POLICE have launched a witness appeal after a young man was left with potentially life-threatening injuries during an attack in Southend.

Officers were called to Southchurch Boulevard at around 10.15pm on Sunday, July 14, following England's match against Spain in the Euros final, to reports of a disturbance.

A man in his 20s was found with a serious head injury.

He was taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries, but his condition is now stable.

It is believed he was punched in the face and then banged his head when he fell to the ground, Essex Police says.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Michelle Rawson said: “There were a lot of people in the area, and we urge to them to come forward if they have any information.

“It was just after the end of the Euros football final and was busy.

“This serious injury appears to be the result of one single punch. It could have been very different outcome for the victim and demonstrates the damage this type of assault can cause.”

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
