This week, Castle Point Council launched a consultation on the “Issues and Options” phase of creating a local plan for the borough.

The council insists that all sites shown are identified as “potential sources of development only” and are “not allocations at this stage”.

Dozens of sites have been put forward to prevent Castle Point from falling victim to “land grabs” by developers. 

Here is a breakdown of some of the key sites listed.

1. Benfleet:

In total 30 different urban sites in Benfleet have been listed as “potential development”.

Some of those include the potential development of Benfleet Methodist Church, in High Road, for 19 new homes, Benfleet Tavern Public House, in High Road, for 25 new homes, and Benfleet Surgery, in Constitution Hill for five new homes.

Sainsbury’s, in High Road, Aldi, off Rushbottom Lane, South Benfleet Social Club, in Vicarage Hill, and the Benfleet Clinic have also all been highlighted.

The council has insisted that “no decisions have been made”. The document also highlights the possibility of the re-development of School Lane Car Park and 1-5 High Street for 144 new homes.

In terms of green belt, the land off Glebelands, the land west of Benfleet, the land between Felstead Road and Catherine Road, Boyce Hill Golf Course has been listed.

2. Hadleigh:

A further 19 urban sites in Hadleigh have been listed as “potential development”.

Some of those highlighted in the document include the potential development of Sandcastles Nursery, in Kiln Road, for 19 new homes, Lidl, in London Road, for 58 new homes, Morrisons, in London Road, for 187 new homes, and The Island Site, High Street, for 61 new homes.

Hadleigh Clinic, the Bus Depot, Castle Lane Car Park, and the Conservative Club has also been highlighted.

3. Canvey:

In total 38 different urban sites on Canvey have been listed as “potential development”.

Some of those highlighted in the document include the potential development of Canvey Island Football Club for 113 new homes, the fire station and police station, in Long Road, and Knightswick Shopping Centre.

The land adjacent the Paddocks has also been highlighted for potentially 201 homes, alongside the Conservative Club, Canvey Library, Iceland, and Canvey Island War Memorial Hall.

The council has insisted that “no decisions have been made” and sites have been included for consultation because they “have development potential”.

In terms of green belt, the land to the west of Canvey Road, the land to the east of Canvey Road, the land south of Charfleets have been listed.

4. Thundersley:

 

There are 12 different urban sites in Thundersley listed for potential development.

Some of those highlighted in the document include Halfords in Rayleigh Road for 38 new homes.

In terms of green belt, the land north west of Thursday, land north of Grasmere Road and

Borrowdale Road, south of Daws Heath Road, East of Rayleigh Road, The Chase, land south west of Daws Heath, and south east of Daws Heath has been listed.
