A TOWN council mired in criticism over the way it is run by a Tory administration has seen three more councillors quit, sparking a slew of by-elections.

Town council chairman, Conservative Bernard Arscott, has confirmed Owen Cartey, Anne Robinson and Murat Agdeve have resigned, causing by-elections.

It follows the resignation of Elms Ward councillor Mark Flewitt, also a former Southend councillor. A by-election for the town council seat vacated by Mr Flewitt will be held on August 15.

The council has suffered a series of controversies since Tories took over last year, causing friction with the community. Police have been called to meetings amid residents’ calls for some Tory councillors to resign over the way the council has been run since the Conservatives took control from the council, which was previously independent.

Mr Cartey, also a serving Southend Conservative councillor representing West Leigh, said it had become “impossible” for community-minded voices to be heard.

He said: “I believe local councillors are here to serve our community to the best of their ability and have complete devotion to their residents.

“Leigh has a fantastic community that I love to represent and will continue doing so on Southend Council, where the vast majority of decisions impacting our area are made.

“Given recent events, the effectiveness of the town council has been undermined completely, making it impossible for community-minded voices to be heard.

“I will however fight for what is right outside of Leigh Town Council and protect my integrity in the process. There must be more listening to local people and a greater willingness to work together.”

Mr Arscott said: “We’re sorry to see Owen resign.

“It’s been a very difficult period.

“It’s a sad day for democracy but I’d like to thank him for the work he has done over the last year or so.”

Mr Agdeve was also approached to comment on his resignation.

Candidates for the Elms ward by-election are confirmed as Keith Ian Evans (Independent, Representing Residents); Peter Wexham (Independent Leigh) and Cate Willoughby (Independent candidate).
