From thieves to speeding drivers, these are 20 residents or visitors in south Essex who have been sentenced at magistrates' courts in recent weeks.

 A SPEEDING motorist caught going above 70mph has been handed a large fine.

Terry Palmer, of Yardeley, Basildon, was driving a Volkswagen Polo on the A30 in Bodmin, Cornwall, when he was found speeding above the 70mph limit on April 13, Bodmin Law Courts heard.

The 42-year-old admitted the offence via the single justice procedure last Monday.

He must now pay a fine of £330, a surcharge to fund victim services of £133, and prosecution costs of £90, the court ordered.

His driving record was also endorsed with four points.


A MAN who failed to hand evidence over to police has been fined more than £600.

Daniela Pereira, of Tenterfields, Pitsea, failed to give information to Metropolitan Police relating to the identification of a Mini Cooper driver alleged to have been guilty of an offence on December 5.

The offence was proved via the single justice procedure at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Friday, July 5.

He has now been fined £660 and his driving record was endorsed with six points.

Pereira must also pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £264 and prosecution costs of £100.


A DRIVER caught using his phone behind the wheel has been spared a driving ban.

Ashley Burgess, of Windsor Road, Bowers Gifford, was driving an Isuzu in Victoria Embankment, Westminster, when he was found using a mobile phone on November 10, Stratford Magistrates’ Court heard.

The 29-year-old admitted the offence on Tuesday, July 9.

He did not receive a ban due to exceptional hardship found but was fined £115 and handed six penalty points.

Burgess must also pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £46 and prosecution costs of £110, magistrates ordered.


A MAN who failed to identify a driver alleged to have been guilty of an offence has been fined more than £600.

Joseph Sternberg, of Cotswold Road, Westcliff, did not give information to the chief officer of Metropolitan Police relating to the identification of the Hyundai driver on February 12.

The offence was proved via the single justice procedure at Bromley Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.

He has now been ordered to pay a £660 fine, a surcharge to fund victim services of £264 and prosecution costs of £110 plus six points on his licence.


A MAN who failed to identify a BMW driver alleged to have been guilty of an offence has been banned from the roads for half a year.

Michael Agius failed to give the information to the chief officer of police in Billericay relating to the identification of the driver on December 2, 2022. The offence was proved in the 37-year-old’s absence.

Agius, of Bate-Dudley Drive, Bradwell-on-Sea, appeared at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on June 27 where he was banned from driving for six months and fined £660.


A WOMAN who attacked two people in Basildon has been jailed for 12 weeks.

Gemma Bayly, of Orchid Place, Basildon, assaulted a man and a woman by beating them in the town on April 2, Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court heard.

The 41-year-old denied two charges of assault by beating but was found guilty on June 18 and was sentenced at the same court on Monday, July 8.

Bayly was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison for each offence, with the sentences to run concurrently.


A DRINK driver caught behind the wheel in Basildon has been banned from the roads.

Bradley Zammit was driving a Ford Focus in Great Knightleys when he was found with 58 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on April 27. The limit is 35.

The 27-year-old admitted the offence at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court where he was banned from driving for one year and three months.

Zammit, of Falstones, Basildon must also pay a £400 fine, £85 prosecution costs and a £160 surcharge to fund victim services, the court ordered.


A MAN who failed to hand evidence to police has been hit with a fine.

Trevor Cooksey failed to give information to the chief officer of Essex Police in Billericay relating to the identification of a Vauxhall Vivaro driver who was alleged to have been guilty of an offence on December 29, 2021.

The 53-year-old admitted the offence at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, June 27.

Cooksey, of Rushfield, Sawbridgeworth, has now been ordered to pay a £166 fine and a surcharge to fund victim services of £17. 


A KNIFE offender has admitted committing another offence while under a suspended sentence order.

Sylvester Adomako, of The Gore, Basildon, committed a further offence during the operational period of the order made made by Thames Magistrates’ Court on August 7 last year for possession of a Class B drug and a bladed weapon.

The 20-year-old admitted the breach at Westminster Magistrates’ Court last Friday.

He has now been handed a four-month prison sentence suspended for a year and three months. 


A VAN driver caught on the roads while uninsured has been hit with a driving ban.

Jordan Rose, of Hall Farm Road, Benfleet, was driving a Ford Transit in St Georges Road, Southwark, on November 22 when he was found without insurance in force covering the van.

The offence was proved via the single justice procedure and the 34-year-old was banned from driving for six months at Willesden Magistrates’ Court last Friday.

Rose has also been ordered to pay a £660 fine, a surcharge to fund victim services of £264 and prosecution costs of £100.


A SPEEDING driver caught going above a 70 miles per hour limit has been hit with a fine.

Ionel Mirea, of Mopsies Road, Basildon, was behind the wheel of a Mercedes on the A1 in Barrowby Thorns when he was recorded doing 87 miles per hour on February 24, Lincoln Magistrates’ Court heard.

The 46-year-old admitted the offence via the single justice procedure on Tuesday.

He has now been ordered to pay a fine of £40, a surcharge to fund victim services of £16 and prosecution costs of £110.

His driving record was also endorsed with three penalty points.


A THIEF who assaulted a police sergeant has been ordered to take part in rehabilitative activities for 30 days.

Ocean Kabir, of Lower Dunton Road, stole two items of designer clothing and a designer bag worth £448 from House of Fraser in Lakeside on August 29 last year, Barkingside Magistrates’ Court heard.

She also assaulted a police sergeant and damaged a custody cell on the same day in Grays.

The 35-year-old admitted all three offences as well as failure to surrender to court bail and was ordered to pay £114 compensation as well as participate in rehabilitation activity on Friday.


A DRIVER found with an unreadable number plate has been hit with a fine.

Basheer Shirzay, of Woolmer Green, Laindon, was driving a Volkswagen Sharan in Waterloo Place, Westminster, when the plates were found to be reflective under infra-red light conditions as there were missing characters thus being unreadable.

The 40-year-old had previously denied driving a vehicle when the registration mark fails to conform with regulations, but changed his plea to guilty at Stratford Magistrates’ Court last Monday.

Shirzay has now been fined £72 for the November 16 offence. He was also ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £29 and £85 prosecution costs.


A LORRY driver who was caught speeding in a major road has been slapped with a fine.

Mark McCarthy, of Trent Close, Wickford, was behind the wheel of a DAF lorry on the A20 in Bexley when he was found going at 52 miles per hour on December 29. The limit is 40. 

The 54-year-old admitted the offence via the single justice procedure last Monday.

McCarthy was handed a £196 fine and three penalty points at Lavender Hill Magistrates' Court.

He must also pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £78 and prosecution costs of £90, the court ordered.


A WOMAN who tried to steal shopping at Pitsea retail park has been ordered to complete unpaid work.

Sarah Corper, of Great Ranton, Pitsea, attempted to steal items worth £95.71 from Farmfoods and attacked a man on June 26, Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court heard.

The 48-year-old admitted attempted theft and common assault on Friday, June 28.

She must now take part in 60 hours of unpaid work and pay £50 compensation for the assault, the court ordered.

Magistrates also ordered Corper to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £114 surcharge to fund victim services.


A FARE dodger caught without a ticket has been ordered to pay nearly £800 by magistrates.

Kai Jager, of Peartree Close, Southend, was travelling on a South Eastern train when he was caught at Chatham without the valid £33.70 ticket on April 27. The offence was proved in his absence at Bexley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, July 3.

Jager, 27, has now been hit with a fine of £440 and ordered to pay £33.70 in compensation. He was also ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £176 and £150 in prosecution costs.


A PASSENGER caught travelling without a £33.30 ticket has been fined more than £200.

Jasmine Curtis, London Road, Leigh, was travelling from London Marylebone to Oxford when she was found to have not paid the fare on December 8, High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court heard.

The offence was proved in Curtis’ absence last Wednesday.

The 25-year-old was handed a £220 fine and ordered to pay £33.30 compensation as well as a surcharge to fund victim services of £88 and prosecution costs of £200.


A FARE dodger who boarded a train without a ticket has been hit with a fine.

Michael Curtis, of Peartree Close, Southend, was at Stratford when he was found to have entered a train without a ticket on December 6.

The offence was proved via the single justice procedure on Monday, July 8.
Curtis has been ordered to pay a fine of £220 and £16.50 in compensation.

The 34-year-old must also pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £88 as well as prosecution costs of £125, the court ordered.


A WOMAN caught without a £14.20 train ticket has been ordered to pay more than £450 in a fine and costs.

Nancy Howgate, of Lampits Hill, Corringham, was caught on a Govia Thameslink train without a valid ticket at London Blackfriars on January 22, Barkingside Magistrates’ Court heard.

The offence was proved on Monday, July 8.

Howgate, 20, was handed a fine of £220 and ordered to pay compensation of £14.20.

She must also pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £88 and prosecution costs of £135.


A COMMUTER caught at a major train station without a £20.10 train ticket has been hit with a fine.

Dave Dyke, of Tudor Road, Leigh, entered a train at London Liverpool Street without having paid the fare on November 19, Barkingside Magistrates’ Court heard.

The offence was proved via the single justice procedure on Monday, July 8.

Dyke, 22, has now been ordered to pay a fine of £220 and compensation of £20.10.

He was also told to pay £125 prosecution costs and a surcharge to fund victim services of £88.
