Work is finally set to begin on a major multi-million pound refurbishment project to rejuvenate a Westcliff theatre.
The ambitious plans to rejuvenate the Cliffs Pavilions were due to begin in January after Willmott Dixon was handed a £5.8 million contract last year.
However, in February, Southend Council revealed it was searching for a “suitably qualified contractor” after it emerged the project could have gone over budget.
It has now revealed a new contractor, Rochford-based Auburn Group Limited, has been appointed to undertake the construction.
Works will begin next month, but the theatre will remain open.
Matt Dent, councillor responsible for culture, tourism, and business, said: “I am pleased to announce that the council has appointed Auburn Group Limited to carry out the refurbishment work after an open tender process.
“The project will begin next month and extend through to 2025.
“While the theatre will remain open, there will be adjustments to the front of house as the work progresses.
“Theatre users will receive advance notice of any changes, and the contractor will provide regular updates.”
The refurbishment will see a two-storey extension with a feature canopy to the east side of the building to form a new main entrance.
A modern, brighter, more welcoming entrance and lobby are also planned, in addition to improvement work to the bar, toilets, and lifts.
The external area to the east of the building will be re-landscaped to form a new public plaza including new paving, planting, lighting and art.
It is hoped this project will help “secure the long-term future” of the popular theatre.
The project will be funded by using a mix of external grant - Levelling Up Fund, prudential borrowing and third party partner funding.
Southend Council previously stressed “it cannot risk going over budget.”
The Cliffs Pavilion will not be closing during construction and shows will continue.
The last major renovation to the Cliffs Pavilion was in 1992 when the balcony was installed.
