Firefighters are at the scene of a fire at an old tanker on the former Thames Oilport site in south Essex.

The small fire, which broke out at 2.47pm today, is at the base of a decommissioned tanker in Coryton.

The tanker was in the process of being demolished and the works have caused a fire, which four fire engines and firefighters are tackling.

Group Manager Mark Eaglestone said: "Crews are currently dealing with a small fire which is at the base of a decommissioned tanker. The tanker was in the process of being demolished and the hot works have caused a small fire at the base of the tanker.

"The tanker did used to hold kerosene so there are small pockets of the product remaining. We have now downgraded the incident to four fire engines and firefighters will remain on scene to extinguish and monitor hotspots."

Crews from Basildon, Brentwood, Southend, Corringham, Grays and Leigh attended the scene. No one has been injured.
