THE UK’s largest street art festival will take over Southend in just four weeks time, with the city’s blank walls turned into huge canvases for bright and colourful artwork.
Ahead of Southend City Jam, from August 30 to September 1, headline artists have been announced as they are set the task of transforming the city centre and seafront into a sea of creative colours.
Selected from more than 800 applicants, the headliners have now been announced, including talents from around the globe, such as Smug, Woskerski, Farid, and Aches.
Known for his photo-realistic murals created completely freehand, Australian artist Smug based in Glasgow, Scotland, is among the headliners.
Also headlining is festival regular, Woskerski, noted for his “vivid illustrations, vibrant colours, and often ironic, seemingly absurd characters that carry relevant messages”.
Another talent to look out for is Farid, from Morelos, Mexico, revered for his vibrant, colourful murals reflecting his deep Mexican cultural pride. Farid’s work features in the Forza Horizon 5 video game.
Completing the headliners’ list is Aches, a Dublin-based Irish artist who first graced the festival in 2022.
He specialises in large-scale murals blending graphic design knowledge with graffiti art.
Matt Dent, cabinet member for culture, tourism and business, added: “This year’s headliners at Southend City Jam look incredible, so don’t miss this unforgettable celebration of street art.
“Experience the creativity of these world-class artists as they transform our city into an open-air gallery, where urban grit meets artistic brilliance.”
The event has been made possible due to Southend BID, the event’s new headline sponsor.
Scott Dolling, Southend BID manager, said: “Southend BID is delighted to help bring this fantastic festival to the city centre again.”
“The artwork transforms many areas, and the positive impact on visitors and residents alike is unparalleled, bringing new audiences and footfall to our business community.”
The festival will run daily from 10am to 5pm.
