A pub with dishes "to die for" has been named among the best places to eat by the British seaside.

The Guardian shared a list of its readers favourite places to each on the coast across the country including cafes, restaurants and pubs by the sea.

The Peterboat, in Old Leigh, was named among the coastal favourites.

Nestled along the sea wall in High Street, The Peterboat is a popular family-run pub and restaurant dating back to the 1700s with sweeping estuary views.

It certainly lives up to its charming reputation, with a carved wooden bar, outdoor terrace and cockle shed.

The menu features an extensive wine list, traditional dishes including fish and chips and fish pie as well as a wide range of other options including steak, cockle chowder, pasta and more.

The Guardian said: "The cockle chowder served in a cottage loaf at The Peterboat in Leigh-on-Sea, Southend, is to die for (£19.95).

"The prawn and chorizo linguine at £17.95 equally so! Fabulous location, right on the sea wall, and the service is always excellent."
