A BASILDON woman who miraculously awoke from a coma hours before her life-support machine was set to be turned off has made “incredible” progress with her recovery and could be able to speak soon.

Emma Price attempted to take her own life after allegedly being bullied at work at KFC in Pitsea, with her family being told she was brain dead two weeks ago.

However, the 32-year-old has now started communicating with her family and is now able to move both her arms.

Yesterday, Emma had her tracheal pipe downsized which will allow her to speak as her current breathing tube is interfering with her larynx, although she remains unable to breathe alone.

Emma’s situation has attracted widespread support, with Labour Basildon council leader, Gavin Callaghan, telling Emma to “stay strong” on social media and stating that he will be writing to KFC’s head office to “ask them to expedite their investigation.”

Mum, Samantha Day, has thanked the support of the south Essex community, adding that it “has kept the family going.”

She said: “She is showing signs of what she was like, her cheeky side, but she isn’t our Emma again yet, with time she is coming back to being more cheeky and smiling. She seems quite content at the moment, she is not in pain but still is on medication and has tubes through her throat.

“It is a long road to recovery, every single day we have travelled from Witham to Basildon to see her, we just cannot believe that the day we were going to turn off her life support, she opened her eyes.

“If she were able to say hello, I would burst out crying, we are amazed at her progress.”
Samantha added that the family isn’t entirely sure yet as to her capabilities, but the “physios are doing a fantastic job” and she has a speech therapist coming to help her “a tiny bit each day.”

KFC has said maintaining a “safe and inclusive” working environment is essential for the business and confirmed an “urgent” investigation has been launched into the bullying claims.
