THE risk of mould and damp impacting residents living in four tower blocks in Southend could be cut thanks to a £1.2million project.

Southend Council is advertising for a supplier to take on a contract to install new ventilation systems in the tower blocks.

South Essex Homes is leading the project to replace “ageing” ventilation systems in Temple Court, Sutton Court, Bewley Court and Longbow flats.

Colin Campbell, councillor responsible for the Southchurch ward, said: “This is a great investment in plenty of homes that desperately need it.

“There are, rather sadly, many instances of children living in mouldy homes across the city, severely affecting their health.

“We have recently had a fire in another tower block too, so improving fire safety is of paramount importance.

“The council provides information on tackling mould in homes, but this investment is a much bigger step in the right direction.”

The housing association is confident the work, which should take place between October and April will reduce the likelihood of damp and mould, as well as boosting fire safety.

A spokesman for South Essex Homes said: “The tower blocks that are planned to have the ventilation system are Temple Court, Sutton Court, Bewley Court and Longbow.

“The ventilation system is required as the existing system is ageing, and it is best practice to replace the existing communal system with individual extraction systems within each individual dwelling. This would help to prevent the spread of smoke in a fire and provide improved ventilation.

“The new improved ventilation system will reduce the likelihood of damp and mould occurring within the properties and will provide improved safety in the event of a fire.”
