SOUTHEND is set for another spectacular "mini airshow" as a host of historic aircraft - including a Second World War bomber - grace the skies using the city’s airport as a base.

The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Lancaster bomber is expected to be based at Southend Airport, between Thursday and Sunday, as it takes centre stage at Eastbourne Airshow.

Alongside the Lancaster bomber, the RAF Typhoon Jet is also expected to make an appearance in the city.

Southend resident Simon Murdoch, an aircraft enthusiast, said: “It will be wonderful to see it back at Southend again and back in the air again. It has recently undergone major maintenance work including fitting a completely new tail at the rear of the aircraft. It is also expected to do a flypast over the airport on Sunday for the Vulcan Open Day.

“Sadly, the BBMF Spitfires and Hurricanes remain grounded following the fatal Spitfire crash earlier this year. But we hope they will all be back in the air soon.”

The Red Arrows will not however be based at the airport this year as they will only be displaying on the Thursday, and will fly down from their base to Eastbourne.

Viewers at the airport can potentially expect to witness a spectacular sight as the Lancaster will conduct a flypast for the Vulcan Open Day on Sunday.

As well as the bomber, the Vulcan event, Visit the Vulcan Classic Jets Day, at Southend Airport, presents another delightful attraction on Sunday.

Attendees can take a guided tour of the Vulcan and its cockpit for an additional fee, whilst viewing weapons carried by the aircraft during its time with the RAF.

This includes the 1,000lb high-explosive bomb dropped on Port Stanley airfield during the 1982 Falklands Conflict.

The Vulcan XL426 will be joined by other exhibits, including the cockpits of classic 1950s and 1960s jets, making it a great time out for the whole family.

Refreshments will be on sale throughout the day and the Hangar Shop will be open selling a selection of Vulcan souvenirs, including models, badges, patches, jams, books and much more.

Adult admission costs £8, with free entry for under-16s. Cockpit visits are an additional £8 per person for both adults and under-16s. Gates will swing open at 10am and close at 4pm.
