More than 160 new “affordable” homes are set to be built in Basildon and Pitsea town centres.

Sempra Homes, a subsidiary company of Basildon Council, has announced plans to create 166 new “affordable” and private sale homes across three developments.

The developments, named Chapelgate, Broadmayne, and Tyefields, will provide housing and according to the developers will “enhance local infrastructure and prioritise biodiversity, improve open space and revitalise town centres”.

The Hill Group has been appointed as the developer for the projects, which are part of a partnership involving Basildon Council, South Essex Council, Homes England, and One Public Estate.

Melanie Keys, service manager at Sempra Homes, said: “We are delighted to see these projects come to life and bring positive changes to the borough.

“This collaborative effort underscores our commitment to improving local housing, infrastructure, and community spaces.

“We also look forward to working with The Hill Group to deliver the social value commitments, including a range of training and apprenticeship opportunities for local residents.”

The projects will provide 87 homes for social rent, 66 for private sale, and 13 for shared ownership.

The shared ownership programme will give priority to veterans, with access also to Basildon borough residents and key workers.

Gavin Callaghan, leader of Basildon Council, said: “New, high-quality housing is a top priority for this administration.

“Through Sempra Homes, Basildon Council is unlocking its housebuilding programme beginning works on 179 affordable homes across five sites this year.

“These will be Basildon homes for Basildon residents.

“As important will be tackling Basildon’s housing waiting list which currently stands at 4,000.

“There is an urgent need to increase the supply of social and affordable homes in the borough.”

Robert Jack, regional director at The Hill Group, added: “It is a great pleasure for The Hill Group to be working in partnership with this distinguished group.

“Our role in this venture is to provide high-quality homes for the community that will stand the test of time while creating job opportunities and training for young people in the local area.”
