An iconic pub which has served members of the LGBT community for more than 50 years has had plans approved to transform it into flats.

The Cliff, in Hamlet Road, has been a staple of the LGBT community for more than 50 years in Westcliff, though its future has been uncertain in recent years following an initial application to transform the building into three flats.

After plans submitted in May 2023 were refused, altered proposals that removed a plan for a two-storey rear flat roof extension were submitted in February.

These plans have now been approved.

The Echo understands the change may not happen for a number of years.

Last year bosses at the Cliff declined to provide details of the plans, including a timescale.

Blenheim Park Labour councillor, Laurie Burton, said: “The closure of the Cliff would be terrible news for the city, especially for the LGBT+ community.

“It’s such a brilliant venue, from drag queens, DJs to the weekly quiz night, everyone is always guaranteed an amazing night.

“I really hope the brewery reconsiders and makes every effort to save the Cliff.”

The plans include the change of use of the existing ground floor from a pub to two flats and another to be created in a two storey flat roof mews house.

The existing managers flat on the first floor is proposed to be used as a private flat and the existing seven bed HMO on the first and second floor will be unchanged and as existing.

Mr Burton added: “I know some will argue that times change, more people like meeting on apps than in person, but I still feel clubs and bars such as the Cliff have an important place in the city.

“We have lost quite a few club venues in recent in the city centre in recent years, so it would be great shame to lose another.

“Obviously the city needs more housing, but this shouldn’t come at the expense of our only dedicated LGBT venue.”

The venue hosts regular events and is a key player in Southend Pride and welcomes everyone through its doors.

The management of the Cliff have been contacted for comment.
