A FAMOUS RAF display team has arrived in Southend today - using the city’s airport as a base as they take part in a popular airshow this weekend.

The RAF Typhoon jet soared into the city today as it uses the base alongside the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Lancaster bomber for the Eastbourne Airshow this weekend.

Photos from Echo camera club member Simon Murdoch show the jet and the spare aircraft arriving together in formation today.

The iconic aircraft are expected to be based at Southend Airport between today and Sunday, with the airshow starting at 2.30pm today and tomorrow, and at 2.15pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Flying will end at 5pm every day.

Sadly, the BBMF Spitfires and Hurricanes remain grounded following the fatal Spitfire crash earlier this year so will not be taking part in the event.

Viewers at the airport can potentially expect to witness a spectacular sight as the Lancaster will conduct a flypast for the Vulcan Open Day on Sunday.

As well as the bomber, the Vulcan event, Visit the Vulcan Classic Jets Day, at Southend Airport, presents another delightful attraction on Sunday.

Attendees can take a guided tour of the Vulcan and its cockpit for an additional fee, whilst viewing weapons carried by the aircraft during its time with the RAF.

Adult admission costs £8, with free entry for under-16s. Cockpit visits are an additional £8 per person for both adults and under-16s. Gates will open at 10am and close at 4pm.
