FAMOUS RAF aircraft are set to soar over south Essex this weekend as they take part in a popular airshow.

The RAF Typhoon and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Lancaster bomber are using Southend Airport as a base for the Eastbourne Airshow, running from Thursday until Sunday.

Photos from Echo camera club member Simon Murdoch yesterday showed the Typhoon jets arriving in formation at Southend Airport ahead of taking part in the event.

As the event continues this weekend, residents will have their eyes to the skies hoping for a glimpse of the iconic aircraft.

For those aircraft enthusiasts hoping to spot them as they leave and return to Southend across the weekend, the timings for the event are as follows:

The Lancaster display at the East Sussex airshow on Saturday is at 3pm and the Typhoon display will be at 5.02pm.

On Sunday, the Lancaster display is at 2pm while the Typhoon display will be at 5.02pm again.

Residents are encouraged to get to a view spot an hour early for the chance to see the RAF aircraft.

Visitor's to the Vulcan's Classic Jets Day on Sunday will also potentially witness a spectacular sight as the Lancaster is expected to conduct a flypast for the open day.

During the event at Southend Airport, attendees can take a guided tour of the Vulcan and its cockpit for an additional fee, whilst viewing weapons carried by the aircraft during its time with the RAF.

Adult admission costs £8, with free entry for under-16s. Cockpit visits are an additional £8 per person for both adults and under-16s. Gates will open at 10am and close at 4pm.
