A SHORTLIST of the top ten most congested roads in Essex has been revealed, with two notorious stretches near Colchester named and shamed.

Cromwell Trucks and Online Marketing Surgery have created their Road Delay Report, which helped rank roads in Essex based on delays and where people are waiting the most on their travels.

The road delays data comes from gov.uk, where it was split into motorway and major A roads, and local A roads.

It looks at how many seconds a vehicle is held up per mile travelled on average in 2023.

The A12 northbound, near the west Colchester junction comes in as the fourth worst road for congestion in Essex.

This road sees cars being delayed for, on average, 66.5 seconds per mile.

Another stretch of the A12 - northbound between the A120 near Colchester West and A1124 - comes in at eighth worst on the list.

This section sees cars being delayed for 44 seconds per mile on average.

Drivers who use the A12 regularly were not shocked by the results and branded the roads "abysmal".

One Gazette reader, who often uses the A12, said: "In past years of working in the south of the county and living just outside Colchester it has taken hours to get back when there have been problems.

"On one occasion I had to go through Boreham and through Ulting to get back to Tiptree.

"On another, I simply rang my partner and told him that I didn't expect to ever get home."

They continued: "Conversely on a snowy day several years ago there was a jack-knifed juggernaut and it took me hours to get back to Colchester as the road was entirely blocked and I had to take the back roads, which were lethal as deep in snow.

"It's become an absolute farce. Every day you hear of accidents causing considerable delays and certainly, when I did the commute it certainly was. Unbelievable."

Steven Todd, another regular commuter, said: "It’s horrible in the mornings getting to work for about two years every single day, but the roadworks are 90 per cent complete so hopefully soon it will be a lot better."

Rebecca Boyd, another motorist, said: "I try not to use A12 Stanway/Marks Tey anymore as no matter what time of day you travel on that stretch of road you will absolutely for certain be sat in traffic - it’s abysmal."
