Proud pupils are toasting success across Southend with one grammar school celebrating its best-ever GCSE results.

Hundreds of students at schools across the borough tore open their results in a year group disrupted by Covid and Raac crises.

Youngsters at grammar school Southend High School for Girls achieved its best ever GCSE results, just a week after the school broke its record for A-level results.

Jason Carey headteacher, said: “It’s fantastic. They’ve done brilliantly well and the students have worked really really hard.

“We’ve had 51 per cent of the grades being 9s and 8s, and a fifth of the grades were 9s.”

A remarkable 1,150 students at Southend High School for Boys, or 70 per cent, picked up the top grades of 7 or above.

Almost a fifth of these were awarded the highest possible grade.

Headteacher Robin Bevan said: “We are delighted with the success of so many students this year at GCSE. There is no doubt this cohort has demonstrated that, supported by the school throughout all the recent challenges, resilience and determination can secure exceptional outcomes.

“The results speak for themselves as we celebrate with all those who have performed so well in their GCSEs.”

With 70 per cent of students achieving the top grades - Westcliff High School for Boys placed among the best in the country.

St Bernard’s High School, also in Westcliff, has placed within the top 20 per cent of schools nationwide thanks to its GCSE performance and recent A-level results.

Allison Moise Dixon, head of the Catholic all-girls school, said: “I remain incredibly proud of our students for their outstanding commitment and results. These achievements are a testament to their hard work and the support from our families and exceptional staff.

“Our holistic approach to education ensures every student can excel academically and personally. I have no doubt our students will continue to achieve great things in the future.”
