STAFF and customers at a popular pub are toasting many more years of success after a major facelift and refurbishment was carried out.
The Castle Pub, in High Street, Hadleigh, re-opened earlier this month after a four-week closure to give the pub a new lease of life.
The pub, which was built as a coach house in 1651 underwent a major refit and now boasts a modern design that makes the most of the buildings period features.
A complete transformation saw a refreshed bar created, new furnishings and an enhanced dining area in a bid to help the business thrive for years to come.
Manager, Una Green, couldn’t be happier with the pub’s facelift, and is keen to make the most of the updated space.
She said: “We’re open to all community groups coming in here to have their meetings. It’s really good for wakes, baby showers, birthdays, we’ve done psychic nights too.” she said.
Despite the fresh new look, regulars, Bob and Annette Henstridge are relieved that the community atmosphere has remained.
“It’s a big improvement, but the atmosphere still feels the same. It’s all much cleaner, much fresher, there’s new upholstery” said Annette.
“We’ve lost nothing but gained everything.”
Now 71, Bob has been drinking in the pub since he was a young man, and recounted stories of how he and his friends would dash between various locals, chasing last orders.
The community atmosphere inside the Castle is clear, and it’s not just Bob and Annette who have a long history with the pub. Bartender Mary Wilkins is the venue’s longest serving member of staff.
“I’ve been here for 18 and a half years and I love it,” she said.
“I’ve got five more years until I can retire but I’ll probably still work here. I’ve told them there’s going to be a plaque with me on up above the bar.”
For those looking to experience The Castle’s unique charm, there’s no shortage of events to be enjoyed. Annette is a regular at the pub’s monthly book group and Una also organises open jam nights, quizzes, poker and more recently, bingo.
