TWO boarded-up and "eyesore" Leigh townhouses are on the market for £1.25 million as part of a plan to create new homes in “one of the most desirable locations on the Essex coast”.

The homes on Leigh Hill are currently empty and a neighbouring property has already been demolished and is surrounded by fencing.

According to plans, the two remaining townhouses are in “poor condition” and in a state of disrepair while former retail units on the ground floor have been vacant for more than a decade.

Southend Council previously gave the green light to plans for part-demolition and the construction of three new homes, and estate agent Gilbert and Rose is now advertising the site for £1.25 million.

Daniel Cowan, leader of Southend Council, welcomes the development opportunity and hopes to see the site “fulfil its potential”.

He said: “Planning permission for new homes was previously approved, so it is a great opportunity for someone to deliver much-needed additional housing in Leigh.

“The site needs some urgent work and TLC because it is a bit of an eyesore at the moment.

“So, I am excited to see someone take it on and help it fulfil its potential.”

The approved plans state that much of the building will need replacing and upgrading to meet residential standards.

Number 22 is structurally sound and will be refurbished as part of the new proposal while number 24 will be part-demolished due to the amount of cracking in the party wall.

Number 26, which is in “very poor structural condition”, has already been demolished but no further work has been carried out.

The application added: “The proposal to rebuild and redevelop numbers 22-26 Leigh Hill will only have a positive effect on the immediate area and it will significantly improve the street scene by refurbishing the currently neglected building.

“The dwellings will replace the rundown and structurally unsound properties that currently occupy the site.”

According to Gilbert and Rose’s advertisement, each home could incorporate four bedrooms, each with a parking space.
