Southend Pier Bank Holiday Bonanza is a huge success

Bouncing back from trouble seen earlier this summer, Southend proved it continues to be the go-to place for family fun as a packed schedule saw residents and tourists alike fill the pier. 

The Bank Holiday Bonanza saw live performances throughout the bank holiday weekend, all with the backdrop of replica Spanish warship Galeón Andalucía as it continues to delight the public.

The event is the latest council push to generate more footfall for the pier and the Squire family, from Westcliff, are confident the events are helping give the attraction “renewed life”.

“We heard the band playing, and we thought, ‘that makes a change’, as it’s often a bit sparse down here,” said dad, Jason.

According to Southend resident Madeline Nathan, the Bank Holiday Bonanza has helped reignite some of the magic that the pier used to hold.

She said in the past the pier “used to have shows, there used to be restaurants, a bowling alley and even an ice rink.”

“It’s nice to have a group playing up on the end hear because you hear the music as you come up.” said Madeline’s husband, Peter.

It’s not just the public who welcome renewed efforts in regenerating Southend Pier.

Darren Lattimer, owner of the pier’s beloved Tea with the Tide, also spoke about the benefit of events such as the Bank Holiday Bonanza.

“It’s a complete turn around from a couple of weeks ago when we were struggling with the weather, and not really getting the footfall,” said Darren.

He believes that the pier has the potential to be a focal point for visitors to the city, adding:

“It’s got a bit of everything and appeals to so many different people. There’s something for everyone.”

Next weekend, the pier will welcome City Jam, a cultural festival that will see Southend Pier taken over by a collective of talented artists. Tickets can be purchased on the day, with workshops running from 11am to 4pm.
