Bus ticket prices across Essex are set to rise from next week following an "annual review".

First Essex has announced changes to fares for its services across the county which will come into effect from Monday, September 9.

The maximum £2 single and £4 return fare cap remains in place, and these changes only apply to some single fares under £2 and returns under £4, as well as the area day, weekly, four-weekly tickets and longer-term tickets.

A First Bus statement explains: "Following an annual review, revised bus fares will apply to our services across Essex with effect from Monday September 9 2024.

"The prices of most area day, weekly and four-weekly and longer-term tickets will be increased. Please note that the maximum £2 single / £4 return fare cap remains in place until at least the end of 2024.

"Some single fares under £2 and returns under £4 will increase. The child single in the Southend Metro, Basildon Shuttle, Chelmsford Inner and Colchester Inner zones will increase to £1.80."

What is the £2 bus cap?

The £2 single fare is available on most bus routes operated by First Essex, with all adults and child single tickets on eligible routes costing no more than £2.

The cap is also available on the X10, X20 and X30 Essex Airlink servics.

This cap is in place until December 31, 2024, and it is not clear if the scheme, introduced under the previous Conservative Government, will be extended.
