Police say they are progressing enquiries into the theft of a beloved statue worth a reported "five-figure sum" in an update today.

Essex Police was informed of the theft of the 'Child in the Park' statue from Lake Meadows in Billericay yesterday. It is believed the theft took place overnight, between 8pm on Sunday and 7am yesterday.

Officers have confirmed entry was forced to a set of park gates and the statue was "removed without permission".

An Essex Police spokesman said: "The statue is worth a reported five-figure sum.

"The theft took place at some stage between 8pm on Sunday 1 September and 7am on Monday 2 September.

"Officers with Basildon local policing team are carrying out house-to-house and CCTV enquiries as part of their investigation.
