Police have issued an update on the condition of the victim of a shocking Laindon machete attack.

It has been confirmed that a man stabbed and taken to hospital in a serious condition following a machete attack yesterday in Woolmer Green is now in a stable condition.

A police spokesman said: "Good news this morning is that the man is now stable. The two arrested remain in custody."

Police were alerted to reports of a fight taking place between three people in Woolmer Green, one of whom was described to them as armed, with witnesses claiming a "machete" was involved. 

Police flooded the estate in Basildon's Woolmer Green following the attack, cordoning off entry from both sides of the estate as well as the entrance to a Trinity Food and Wine, a nearby shop where the victim ran following the attack.

Shortly before 5.30pm on Tuesday, two men were arrested in Basildon on suspicion of GBH with intent.

They remain in custody today, for questioning. 

Witnesses to the attack yesterday described the man "covered in blood" following the attack, bursting through the doors of Trinity Food and Wine for help.

It is believed the victim suffered a head injury following the attack.
