FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a huge blaze at a recycling centre next to the A127 as motorists are urged to "take care".

Crews were first called to Hovefields Avenue on the Burnt Mills industrial estate in Basildon today at 1.15am today and found warehouses and about 15 vehicles, fully alight.

Residents reported hearing "loud bangs" from the scene and smoke could be seen billowing across the A127.

Twelve crews from Billericay, Canvey, Corringham, Grays, Leigh, Orsett, Rayleigh Weir, Southend and Wickford, and two aerial ladder platforms, remain at the scene at the scene.

Essex Fire Service says crews are making "good progress" tackling the fire and warns residents and motorists will see large smoke plumes this morning.

Group Manager Dave Bond said: "Residents and motorists in the area will see large plumes of smoke over the next few hours as crews continue to extinguish the fire.

"Please keep your doors and windows closed. Take extra care on the roads, but avoid the area if you can."

Due to smoke in the area, anyone living near the incident is advised to keep their doors and windows closed, and motorists using the A127 between the Nevendon interchange and Rayleigh Spur roundabout are urged to take extra care
