A man has suffered a serious head injury following an assault near a pub in Westcliff.

Emergency services rushed to London Road at the junction of Park Street in Westcliff just before 10pm.

On arrival, it was established that a man had suffered a wound to his head during an assault.

The injury is believed to be serious and he was taken to Southend Hospital for treatment.

Photos from the scene showed a police cordon in place from the early hours of this morning while officers investigated the incident.

Essex Police has since launched an appeal to find a man who left the scene in a grey car.

He is described as a white, in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5ft 10ins tall, of muscular build with strawberry blond hair and a trimmed beard.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "We are appealing for witnesses following reports a man had been assaulted in Southend yesterday evening.

"Officers were called to London Road at just before 10pm. A man had a wound to his head and was taken to hospital for treatment. His injury is believed to be serious, but not life-threatening.

"We are looking for a man who left the scene in grey car. He is described as a white, in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5ft 10ins tall, of muscular build with strawberry blond hair and a trimmed beard.

"Anyone with information should contact us as soon as possible.

"Please cite incident 1206 of 17 September."

A spokesman for The East of England Ambulance Service said: "We were called just before 10pm on Tuesday with reports of a man with a head injury on London Road in Southend. "Three ambulances and an ambulance officer vehicle were sent to the scene. The man was transported to Southend University Hospital for further treatment."
